RAJSHAHI, May 5: Amid heavy clapping and chanting of slogans, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia Wednesday declared that programs of anti-government movement will be announced from the party''s May 19 Dhaka city grand rally, reports UNB
The anti-government movement will be launched to save the country and its people from "repression, misrule and misdeeds" of the Awami League government, she said and urged the people of all walks of life to prepare for making the planned movement a success.
Leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia made the announcement while addressing a grand rally at the city''s Madrasha Maidan, organized by Rajshahi city BNP as part of her ongoing organizational tours to divisional headquarters to mobilize public support against the government''s misrule and failure to run the country and also to implement its election pledges.
Describing the misdeeds and failures of the 16-month-old Awami League government in every sector, Khaleda during her speech repeatedly wanted to know from the huge gathering what should be the proper action against the government and the whole crowd replied in unison, "Andolon, Hartal, Oborodh."
She said there is no alternative to wage movement right now to save the country and its people from the oppressive rule of and to ensure the security and dignity of mothers, fathers and sisters.
A huge number of people gathered at the rally and listened to Khaleda Zia''s speech braving rain.
The BNP chairperson alleged that the present government has created artificial crisis of electricity causing untold sufferings to the people in a bid to give work of rental power plants to its party men and family members without tender as well as to serve the interest of its foreign friends.
She said the government will have to incur loss of over Tk 70000 crore in three years for giving contracts of private rental power plants and buying electricity at high price.
The people will have to bear the huge loss. Khaleda during her over one-hour speech from 4:10 pm touched upon the government failures in different sectors, AL entente with the last military-backed caretaker government, non-implementation of its election pledges, repression on the opposition and women particularly girl students at different educational institutions and so on.
Describing the behind-the-scene story of promulgation of state of emergency on January 11, 2007, she asked the government if it has no weakness for General Moeen to immediately arrest the former army chief for killing democracy by bringing in emergency rule.
Referring to the UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh Renata Lok Dessallien''s recent statement before leaving the country for joining her next assignment, Khaleda said no letter was sent from the UN.
The letter which was made public in the name of the UN, she said, was "jointly prepared by Renata and Moeenuddin" describing that if emergency was not promulgated the army will be loser as it will not get jobs in the UN peacekeeping missions.
She said ''Moeenuddin'' had briefed the President wrongly and pressured him to promulgate state of emergency. Moeenuddin also misled the army by showing that letter and also misled the people.
Khaleda further said Renata also mentioned that Moeenuddin had told a lie.
She said the ''Moeenuddin-Fakhruddin'' government has caused huge loss to the country in every sector and pushed the country 20 years back.
The BNP chairperson alleged that the ruling party activists caused obstructions and made attack on BNP supporters on their way to join the Rajshahi grand rally.
She said the government also imposed restriction on live telecast by private TV channels of her today''s address in Rajshahi apparently unnerved by seeing the huge rush of people in her previous grand rallies in Chittagong and Khulna cities.
In this regard, she mentioned the attack by the ruling Awami League terrorists at Singa in Natore today on BNP leaders and workers who were coming from Bogra to join the Rajshahi grand rally.
Khaleda said Zakir Hossain, a BNP activist, was killed in the attack and many were inured while many vehicles were damaged and burnt by the ruling party activists.
Presided over by Rajshahi city BNP president Mizanur Rahman Minu, the grand rally was also addressed by local leaders including Tofazzel Hossain Topu, Aslam Sarker, Abul Kalam Azad and Mozaddedul Sumon. The central leaders could not address the rally due to time constraint as well as rain and wind that forced the rally to be concluded early.
Criticizing the Awami League government for failing to run the country, leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia said the Awami League government has come to power not to govern the country but to engage in plunder and corruption and also to make the country "subservient and a failed state."
She alleged that the top to bottom of the government are busy in making money.
The BNP chairperson cautioned that they have all documents and information in their hand over the misdeeds and corruption of the ruling party and those would be made public in proper time.
She said no person of any profession including politicians, students, teachers, government officials and businessmen is safe under this government. "So, sooner the government will be removed the better for the people."
Referring to the tragic incidents at Pilkhana BDR HQs, Khaleda said the present Prime Minister and the former Army chief Moeenuddin cannot avoid the responsibility of the tragic killing of 57 brilliant army officers.
On the ruling party allegation about BNP-Jamaat relation, she countered by saying that it was not with BNP but good relations remained between Awami Legaue and Jamaat from much earlier as both the parties took part in the 1986 general election under autocratic Ershad regime violating the political agreement between the then BNP-led seven-party alliance and the Awami League-led 14-party alliance, thus giving legitimacy to the autocratic Ershad government.
She alleged that it is Awami League''s nature to give legality to illegal and autocratic government as it finally gave legality to the last military-backed illegal caretaker government as well.
The BNP chairperson said though the present government gives legality to ''Moeenuddin-Fakhruddin'' government''s activities, the BNP consider it an illegal government.
Referring to the ruling party''s attacks and repression on and threats to its opponents, Khaleda said the ruling party has firearms including rifle, pistol and gun, while BNP has no weapon. "But people are with BNP."
She said when people will take to the street the guns of the ruling party will drop from their hands and will no longer work.
